After the success of Maëlstrom (Best Canadian Film, VIFF 2000), Cannes winner Next Floor (VIFF 2008), and Genie award-winning Polytechnique (2009), Denis Villeneuve directs a staggering adaptation of Wajdi Mouawad’s acclaimed stage play. Twins Jeanne and Simon Marwan (Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette) weren’t expecting much from their mother Nawal’s (Lubna Azabal) will and are understandably stunned when Jean Lebel (Rémy Girard), notary and long-time friend of Nawal’s, reads her last wishes: for the twins to hand-deliver two letters, one to a father they thought dead, the other to a brother they never knew existed. Simon initially resists, while Jeanne feels the need to venture into the Middle East in order to respect her mother’s wishes and piece the mystery together.


Villeneuve expertly parallels the twins voyage East with Nawal’s voyage West which starts with her barely escaping an honour killing after it’s discovered that she’s been impregnated by her boyfriend. Forced to give up the baby, Nawal swears that she will one day find him and eventually sets out to do so in the middle of religious warfare.


Incendies takes an unbiased and painfully poetic look at the roots of all wars through two young adults’ personal voyage to the core of hatred and enduring love. Brimming with gripping performances and outstanding cinematography, Incendies is a must-see.
